本講義では、地質学の分野における基本的な理論的概念と基礎的な調査法(プレートテクトニクス、岩石形成過程、地震学の原理、放射年代測定、生命の進化など)を理解することを目的とします。地質学の基礎知識を身につけたい、あるいは向上させたい学生に向けられます。(DP1)

The purpose of this course is to provide students with a basic understanding of fundamental concepts of Earth Science (e.g., plate tectonics, rock formation processes, earthquakes, volcanoes, radiometric dating, evolution of life), and to develop their ability to analyze and critically evaluate Earth Science-related publications. The students choose at the beginning of the course what they would like to learn. They can acquire new knowledge or further their understanding of geological processes according to their personal interest in the subject. They can also choose to learn about concepts that will be useful in their academic field and future professional career.

The course include a broad range of topics related to earth science and reflect the multidisciplinarity of this field. Examples of topics which may be covered (depending on students' preferences):
A brief history of geology Minerals and rocks, and how they form The age of rocks The Earth’s landscape through the ages The origin and evolution of Life Volcanoes and volcanic eruptions Earthquakes Biogeochemical cycles Marine geology: what the ocean floor can tell us about Earth's past and our future The Earth’s climate: past, present, and future Earth resources and the environment

The grading is based on two reading assignments consisting each of one report (65%) and one oral presentation (35%).
