This course aims that students will learn the basic concepts of business strategy through case studies based on real-world cases. Students will also learn the procedures for conducting case studies. The topics covered in this course include the following: creating competitive advantages; analyzing exernal and internal environment of the firm; corporate governance; organizational designs; and strategic leadership.

After completing this course, the student will be able to:
1. Understand the basic concepts of strategic management.
2. Understand how strategic case analysis is used to simulate real-world experiences.
3. Identify the steps involved in conducting a strategic management case analysis. 
授業の内容や構成
Week 1: Course orientation, Introduction exercise

Week 2-3: Case 1 Robin Hood (Leadership for strategic management; sustainable competitive advantage; vision, mission, strategic objectives; external environment; internal environment; efficiency vs. effectiveness; stakeholder management)

Week 4-5: Case 2 Microfinance (Leadership for strategic management; vision, mission, strategic objectives; stakeholders, Generic strategies; industry or product life cycles, Leadership; integrative thinking; ethical orientation)

Week 6-7: Case 3 Ford (Strategic management; vision, mission, strategic objectives; stakeholder groups, Industry competition five forces; general environmental factors, Value-chain analysis; resource-based view of the firm; VRIN, Organizational structure)

Week 8-9: Term project instructions (The case for the term project will be distributed.)

Week 10-11: Case 4 Johnson & Johnson (Acquisition; diversification, Organizational structure, Leadership)

Week 12-13: Case 5 Procter & Gamble (Leadership; barriers to change; learning organization, Organizational structure; modular organization, Related and unrelated diversification)

Week 14-15: Case 6 Zynga (Intellectual and human capital; dynamic capabilities, Opportunity recognition, Informational vs. behavioral control, Leadership; learning organization; ethical orientation)

Week 16: Term project due

There are no prerequisites for this course. 
成績評価の方法と基準
[Course evaluation]
1. Term project - 40%
This is an individual assignment. Instructions will be provided around 8th week of the semester. Late submission will be accepted with a penalty of a 10% deduction per day (24-hour period).
2. Participation - 40%
Actively participating in various class activities is very important in this course. The class activities include case discussions, in-class exercises, online quizzes, and discussion boards.
3. Quizzes - 15%
There will be 5-6 homework assignments, which take the form of online quizzes. Each assignment has a due date. Late submission will be accepted with a penalty of a 10% deduction per day (24-hour period).
4. Attendance - 5%
Attendance will be taken in each class meeting. If you miss more than two classes without reasonable reasons, you will lose 5% of your course grade.

To pass this course, you must receive a C- or higher grade. The grading schema is the following:

There is no required textbook for this course.

Students are required to read a case in advance and get ready to participate in discussion during the class. 
注意事項
This course covers about half of the textbook listed as a reference. The remaining content will be taught in the spring semester of odd-numbered years under the course titles 'Introductory Practical Management II (E)' and 'Special Lecture for Basic Subjects (Practical Management II)'.
